,” SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted Thursday, repeating his call to hit the Red Planet with nuclear weapons in order to release CO2 and spark global warming.
Musk has long advocated the nuclear option and man-made global warming theory as a means to make Mars more inhabitable to Earthlings by inducing the so-called “greenhouse effect” via CO2, Business Insider reports: “In an appearance on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" in 2015, Musk said Mars could be warmed by dropping thermonuclear weapons (hydrogen bombs) over the poles, prompting Colbert to call him a ‘supervillain.
’” In his “Late Show” interview, Musk called nuking Mars “the fast way” to “transform Mars into an Earth-like planet.”
“He elaborated a few weeks later at an event for his solar-panel company Solar City, saying the aim would be to create two miniature ‘suns’ over the poles using nukes,” Business Insider notes.
In a 2015 article covering the Solar City event, The Verge explains Musk’s global warming plan for Mars: “The tiny suns would then warm up the planet and turn any frozen carbon dioxide into gas.
CO2 is a potent greenhouse gas, meaning it absorbs and traps heat.
The more of the gas that's in the atmosphere, the warmer the surface of Mars becomes.”
